Lydstock 2011

I first saw The Avatars performing whilst they were hosting one of the popular 'Open Mic' sessions at the Tavistock Wharf earlier this year. A frequent Wharf visitor myself as both a spectator and participant, I was immediately struck by the breadth of their repertoire. It spans varying musical genres from 1957 right through to the present day, from Jerry Lee Lewis to Adele. Fair to say, therefore, that they cater for all musical tastes! This attribute makes the band infinitely adaptable - which is why I was delighted to extend an invitation for them to perform at 'LYDSTOCK'.

With four bands scheduled on the main stages, it seemed appropriate to give The Avatars the penultimate 'LYDSTOCK' slot, given their diverse and accessible song list. This proved a sound choice, and a large number of the 300 festival-goers were up and dancing as they started their set.

With six members in the band, there was a lot going on up there on stage! Nuala fronted the band with charisma and energy, flanked by guitarists Mike and Mark who each provided strong vocals. With Karen doubling on both violin and keyboards, the band were able to seamlessly switch musical moods without losing any momentum. Nuala and Karen were on the move constantly – giving a vitality to the whole show – it was truly infectious. Higgi anchored it all down at the back on both electric drums and Handsonic. The absence of traditional acoustic drums gave the band a refreshing visual dynamism. Adi fluently tied it all together on the bass.

The audience’s attention was held right to the end of the one hour fifteen minute set, when they left the stage to prolonged applause. Amongst the songs performed were such instantly recognizable hits as The Devil Went Down To Georgia, Sweet Child O Mine, Great Balls of Fire and Nutbush City Limits. There were also some fabulous songs that were slightly apart from the mainstream such as Mayhem, White Wedding and Sun Dirt Water.

If you’re ever in need of a perfect Festival band – look no further, The Avatars will not disappoint.

Whitchurch Inn, Oct 2011

The Avatars played here at the Whitchurch Inn on the 15th October.  I was astounded at the band, they far surpassed my expectations!!!  The (very large) crowd had a fantastic time and were all up & dancing.  I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this group, just make sure you get plenty of extra beer & staff in!!  Can't wait to get them back again.
